MOROTO PRISON BREAK UPDATES: Prisons boss confirms the recapture of 7 inmates

Moroto government prison authorities yesterday confirmed the allegations of inmates escaping from the northern government prison and provided updates on the efforts to capture over 200 prisoners who escaped and left one UPDF officer who was manning the prison severely injured and died today morning due to severe bleeding.

It was confirmed that the prisoners were armed at the time of escape but UPDF helicopters and prisons officers had stepped into in a bid to recapture these inmates.The 219 prisoners took the eastern direction heading to the bushes and shrubs of neighbouring Kenya.

A total of seven out of the 219 prisoners who escaped from Moroto prison have reportedly been re-arrested, the daily parrot  news desk understands.

At around 4:30pm on Wednesday afternoon, inmates overpowered prison warders at Singila prison in Moroto District and broke into the armoury and took off with 15 guns and ran towards Mt.Moroto.

However, according to the Uganda Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine, seven of these have since been re-arrested.

“Three were killed during the pursuit whereas seven have been re-arrested and returned to prison,”Baine said on Thursday morning.
