Bulambuli County MP Alex Burundo and dozens of his supporters were over the weekend arrested and detained at Mbale Central Police Station over flouting COVID-19 guidelines.
The group was picked up by Police under the command of District Police Commander (DPC) Edison Muhangi on Saturday evening in Sironko district while holding a procession.
It is alleged that Burundo led the procession from Namunsi, a trading centre in Mbale City on his way to Bulambuli district but were intercepted by the Police in Sironko town council.
DPC noted they intervened because the legislator and his supporters were violating COVID-19 preventive measures put in place by the health ministry and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
It was unfortunate that the legislator could do such a thing. The President was very clear on issues concerning procession and now he mobilises boda boda riders and other people who formed a very big parade that could spread the COVID-19 disease, DPC Muhangi said
He said besides Burundo and his supporters, a number of motorcycles and three pickup trucks were impounded.
It is said that Burundo was celebrating his victory as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for the Bulambuli County parliamentary seat following a declaration by a tribunal on Thursday.
